Who Needs a Bill of Sale?
You can use a bill of sale form as proof of purchase – just like a receipt. The DMV requires one when you register a vehicle for the first time. It will generally include transaction details, such as:
- A description of the vehicle (i.e., make, model, year and body style).
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
- The final sale price of the vehicle.
- Buyer’s name and address.
- Seller’s name and address.
- Sale date and location.
- Transaction details (i.e., purchase price, terms, or gift).
- Warranty details (typically sold on an “as-is” basis).
After signing a bill of sale document, the buyer must submit an original copy (plus a properly assigned certificate of title) to register the vehicle with the DMV.

What Are Your Next Steps?
Once you have a signed bill of sale (and a properly assigned vehicle title), the buyer will need to visit the DMV with all required documentation to register the vehicle. Some states also require the seller to file a release of liability. Contact your DMV for specific instructions in your state.
